Fundraising
As a 501(c)(3) tax
exempt organization, the American Organ Transplant
Association (AOTA) can establish trust accounts
for individuals who must raise money for their
transplant surgery, whereby donations can be tax
deductible as allowed by law.
According to the United
Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS):
"The cost of
a transplant and follow-up care varies across
the country and by the organ type. Even before
your transplant, these costs can add up quickly.
Few patients are able to pay all of the costs
of transplantation from a single source. Most
likely, you will have to rely on several sources."
Many sources quote transplantation
evaluation, surgery and aftercare to range between
$100,000 to $700,000 for just the first year.
Medication for immunosuppressants can range anywhere
between $8500 to $36,000 per year.
The cost of transplantation
varies, but all agree that the costs are high
with insurance, Medicare and Medicaid only providing
limited coverage. For this reason, organizations
such as the American Organ Transplant Association
provide additional fundraising assistance to transplant
patients.
In addition to setting
up the trust account for donations, the American
Organ Transplant Association will soon begin providing
fundraising assistance for costs associated with
transplantation
To apply for assistance,
patients should have their social worker or transplant
coordinator call us at . The
information required will be taken over the
phone and a patient agreement will be mailed to
the patient. This agreement outlines how we will
help and allows us to use the patient's photo
and story to benefit their campaign.
We will provide a Fundraising
Consultant that will work with the transplant
patient's family and friends to train and guide
them on how to conduct on-going fundraising. Our
goal is to ensure that transplant patients have
money put aside for their transplant and aftercare
thereby providing great relief to their situation.
Our efforts include creating
and managing a trust account, using AOTA's
501(c)3 status so that donations are tax deductible
as allowed by law. We will keep a tally of the
money raised, pay expenses and provide a regular
accounting of the funds.
We work with the family
to set up the initial organization and campaign
goals, working together with volunteers and family
members to raise the necessary funds. We provide
public relations efforts, fundraising ideas and
tools, such as collection canisters, and develop
a plan for completing the campaign.
Sometimes fundraising
includes negotiating with the transplant centers
and service providers on behalf of the patient
or working directly with the hotels and airlines
to ensure the lowest cost services.
Each campaign sets
its own goals and its success is dependent
upon the amount of work the family members and
volunteers are willing to do.
